Overview

I'm Laura Wilson-North, an English-speaking destination makeup artist based in Chamonix - often in Geneva - working across the French Alps, Swiss Alps, Italy and beyond. In this series, we're exploring my top wedding destinations across France, Switzerland & Italy.

Chamonix is one of the most iconic wedding destinations in the French Alps, set beneath Mont Blanc and surrounded by dramatic peaks, glaciers and alpine forests. It combines high-mountain adventure with elegant hospitality, from luxury hotels and intimate chalets to breathtaking outdoor ceremony spots. Couples come for the scenery, but also for the atmosphere: active, international, romantic and a little wild. For summer elopements or winter weddings, Chamonix gives the day unforgettable mountain energy.

Living in Chamonix for twenty years, I could talk about this all day! I've worked as a makeup artist (and often celebrant) at weddings and elopements at beautiful venues all over Chamonix. In terms of the mountain locations, places like Lac Blanc are a bit of a slog for all but the most adventurous; better to stick to the more easily-accessed Montenvers, L'Aiguille du Midi, La Flegere or Le Brevent for your ceremony - or even tested valley locations like the village of Le Lavancher or the popular lakes at Les Gaillands. What makes wedding makeup different in Chamonix?

Chamonix weddings are shaped by mountain light, altitude, dry air, changing weather and long outdoor days. Makeup needs to feel natural in person, photograph beautifully in bright Alpine light, and last through ceremonies, portraits, travel, wind, sun, snow or heat. Living and working here gives me a practical understanding of how makeup behaves in real mountain conditions, and how to prepare skin so it feels comfortable from morning to evening.

What surprises couples about getting married in Chamonix

What surprises many couples about getting married in Chamonix is how much the mountains shape the day. The scenery is the obvious part, but it is also the light, weather, timing and sense of adventure. Conditions can change quickly, and logistics often need more thought than people expect. A road closure or long Mont Blanc Tunnel queue can mean a time-eating detour; winter ceremonies need careful planning around daylight, and even in summer, the Alpine sun can be stronger than expected. But that is also what makes Chamonix weddings so memorable. Many couples choose the valley because skiing, hiking, climbing or travelling in the mountains is already part of their story, so the wedding feels like a natural continuation of that life together.

Best seasons for a Chamonix wedding

There is no single best season for a Chamonix wedding...each one creates a different feeling. Summer brings long evenings, green valleys, lake settings and easier access to outdoor locations, making it popular for destination weddings and elopements. Autumn is quieter and softer, with beautiful colour and calmer energy, while spring can still feel snowy higher up, especially on the north-facing side of the valley. The right season depends on the atmosphere you want: cosy winter romance, warm Alpine light, outdoor drinks, or a quieter mountain celebration.

How far in advance should I book wedding makeup in Chamonix?
For a Chamonix or Alps wedding, it is sensible to enquire around nine to twelve months before the wedding, and earlier if you already know your date and would like a specific artist. Many destination weddings are planned well in advance, and peak summer and winter dates can book quickly.
